As a professional TV for the past 28 years, I’ve sold a ton of pilots. You’ve never heard of them, because they tend to die during various stages of the development process.

To be clear, this is 100% normal. It may sound like I’m making excuses, but anyone in the industry will tell you it’s not a reflection on me or my writing talent. Only a very small percentage of pilots ever make it to air. That’s just the nature of the game.

I still get paid to write these pilots — and paid well — so having a pilot die on the vine doesn’t offend me as much as it offends other people. As long as it’s well written, a studio will pay me to write another one.

People always ask if I can get the rights back, and resurrect it at another network?
