If a studio doesn't buy the pitch, can the writer ask what kind of ideas the studio wants?
How Hollywood pitch meetings really work
When my writing partner and I decide it’s time to develop a new tv show, it can take months to land on a concept that we think is sellable. When we have something that we’re happy with, and the idea is fully fleshed out, we’ll reach out to a producer. Because we’re proven showrunners, having them attached isn’t necessary, but it can definitely help sell the project.
That said, it can’t be difficult just getting a producer attached to a project. They can only shepherd so many projects, so they idea has to really appeal to them. Assuming they like it, they’ll have input and suggestions on how to make the pitch more sellable. It can easily take another six months before we agree that the idea is ready to take to market.
