How useful are credits from other artistic mediums when trying to start in TV and film?

I believe this question came from a stand-up comedian, hoping that his qualifications could apply to screenwriting, and land him a job.

Given that his job is to entertain people, which is similar to what I do for a living, it’s a reasonable question. But are his skills transferable?
