How to tell if your idea is a book or a movie?

During one of my Substack Lives, a follower asked, “How do I know if my idea should be a book or a movie?”

It’s such a great question, I’m mad that I didn’t think of it myself.

Like most kids of my generation, I spent a lot more time watching TV than I did reading books. That’s why I was interested in becoming a television writer as opposed to novelist.

I imagine if I was born a hundred years earlier, I would’ve become an author.

Given that the person asking this question doesn’t seem to have a clear preference, what should they do with their idea?

Should they write a book or a screenplay?
