How should a writer get their work "out there?"

“How do I get my work out there?”
That’s a question I often get. Some people think that submitting to a contest, website, or festival is the answer.
Sorry, that sounds a lot like winning American Idol. I hope you’ve got a better plan than that.
Breaking into Hollywood is like climbing a mountain. You want to get your show made or your movie made.
But you don't start climbing a mountain at the top.
You start at the bottom!
One step at a time until you finally get to the top.
So what does the bottom look like?
