A pilot is the first episode of a TV series, and it establishes the world we’re going to be living in: the central characters, the main locations, and the overall conflict of the show.

A premise pilot is when we devote the entire first episode to show how we got into this world. Many studios don’t want to buy a premise pilot, and with good reason.
